African Fat-Tailed Gecko Care Sheet
African Fat–tail Geckos are medium-sized lizards that come in a variety of colors and patterns from tan coloration to bright orange, with dark bands or patterns, and some having no pattern at all. Their bodies are covered with raised tubercles, and they have fat tails which store water and fat.
Setup: Cheap and easy is part of AFT gecko care. A 10 gallon will provide enough space for a pair of geckos.
- Never put two males together. They will fight.
If you plan on getting more geckos, add 5 gallons per gecko. If you want more than one, buy females, they get along wonderfully.
Provide Under Habitat heat. Heating is essential no matter what gecko you have. African Fat-Tailed Geckos like their “basking areas” to be at 85-95 degrees Fahrenheit. Their cool sides should be somewhere between 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Here are some possible heat sources:
- Under-tank heaters: These are loved by most geckos, because it helps digest their food faster. They run around $20. It is nice to use these under the humid hide.
- Basking lights: These are loved by most hobbyists, because it heats the air (unlike an under-tank heater) and the temperature can be measured easier. They run around $30 for both the fixture and the bulb.
There are other heater sources, but please don’t use them unless they are intended for reptiles. Avoid UVB bulbs and heated rocks; they aren’t suited for African Fat-Tailed Geckos.
Feeding: We recommend a mixture of Vionate and Calcium with D3 1:1 parts sprinkled on the insects. The easiest to feed will be crickets, some AFTS can learn to eat meal worms, superworms and dubia roaches. So long as your insects are dusted properly you will have a healthy pet fat tailed gecko.
- Add the substrate and decorations. Most African Fat-Tailed Geckos will be fine with a paper substrate (paper towel, newspaper, packing paper), but if you want something that looks better you can use mulch (sold at your local pet store).
- Make sure you have at least two hiding spots.
- Sphagnum moss can help improve your humidity.
