Painted turtle care
We have provided a general painted turtle care guide below. Be sure to spend the proper amount of time learning how to care for your new baby turtle for sale. Like any water turtle care guide, general care includes water quality, water temperature, UVB and dry dock setups and feeding.
Southern painted turtle for sale – lifespan
Painted turtles, when raised in captivity can reach ages over 50 years! In the wild, it is believed that the lifespan of the painted turtle is 20-30 years. When cared for properly your new captive bred baby painted turtle will live a long, happy life!
painted turtle for sale – diet
Painted turtles for sale are omnivorous and will accept both animal and plant matter with equal enthusiasm. Along with fish, worms, and insects, offer them green, leafy vegetables and aquatic plants such as water lettuce, water hyacinth, and duckweed.
Southern painted turtle supplements
Painted turtle diet should also be supplemented with a reptile multivitamin as well as calcium. Using a high-quality pellet or water turtle food can also cover your need for supplements. Most higher end water turtle pellets or water turtle food will contain an ample amount of vitamins and minerals necessary for the healthy growth of your new baby water turtle.
painted turtle water
Pristine water is key to raising any healthy aquatic turtle. If you have city provided water, chances are your water is loaded with pre-treated chlorine. While Chlorine levels this high may be safe for humans, they could be fatal to your new baby painted turtle. We recommend letting the water sit for at least 48 hours when using city provided water as your source. Also, using an additive like Stress enzyme for turtles and freshwater fish works as well.
Southern painter turtle for sale habitat setup
When setting up the new painted turtle habitat, consider their current but also their mature sizes. While your new baby painted turtle for sale may be the size of a 50 cent piece now, he/she will end up being 7-8″ at full maturity and can live up to 80 years! This being said, plan on either getting a large aquarium to start or plan on upgrading to a new home within a few years.
For this reason, you can either set up a small 15-20 gallon tank for the first 2 years OR go to a 55 long now. Also, be sure to provide a dry dock and basking spot at all times. Providing the proper dry dock and UVB basking area, your turtle will not suffer from shell rot or fungal infections that may take place when the turtle is not able to fully “dry off”. Dry docks are important when planning your painted turtle aquarium set up.
Southern Painted turtle Size
Painted turtles reach sizes of 7-8″ with females growing larger than males. It is not uncommon to see a 9″ female painted turtle at full maturity. Things like how fast and how much you feed as well as aquarium size will directly affect overall size at full maturity.
