Greek tortoise Keepers are strongly advised to refrain from buying captive bred Greek tortoises ONLY.  Captive bred Greek tortoises are typically offered for sale in spring and late summer.  As always, buy captive bred over wild caught as care is much easier and healthy tortoises are key.

Greek Tortoise Size

Golden Greeks are the smallest tortoise of the Greek tortoise family.  Females reaching sizes of 8-9″ with males 4-5″ on average. Depending on the subspecies, Greek tortoises will grow to between 5 and 8 inches. Some examples of T. g. Ibera may attain 10 or 11 inches, but this is rare.  Locating Ibera Greek tortoises is normally easier than finding the rare Golden Greek tortoise for sale.

Male Greek tortoises are usually smaller than females, but again, there are exceptions.
At hatching, most Greek tortoises are no more than an inch in length. Here at the farm, all of our baby Greek tortoise for sale basically eat the same diet.  A diet that is high in calcium greens, and fresh veggies, is key.  Using fresh Romaine, Collard greens, mustard greens, lettuces, spring mix is great.  In addition, we feed squash, zucchini, endive, bell peppers and shredded carrots.

Supplements twice a week should be sprinkled on the food.  Here at the farm, we use a powdered calcium with vitamin D3 (reptocal sold here) as well as a reptivite multi-vitamin and mineral supplement we sprinkle on our food twice weekly.  A 50/50 mixture works best to provide ample vitamins to your new baby Greek tortoise for sale.

Greek tortoises enjoy warm temps year round, and Golden greeks prefer not to hibernate like their Ibera cousins.  Golden greeks will require warmer year round temps, not to dip below 60 in the evenings.

Housing Golden Greek tortoises outdoors in a naturalistic pen is always best. During the warmer part of the year, they can be kept in spacious enclosures that are well planted with edible vegetation and receive plenty of time in natural, full sun.  When under 24 months of age, we recommend keeping in a closed container with high humidity and lower air movement.

Baby Golden Greeks can get dehydrated quickly, so keeping it humid is a big deal. For juveniles and adults kept Indoors, the construction of a “tortoise table” will fit your captive bred Greek tortoise perfectly.

A 3-by-6-foot unit made of plywood will suffice for a single adult and up a group of 1 male and 3 females. Using Wood is always recommended over plastic or glass so that the tortoises cannot see through their enclosure’s walls. It is important that the tortoise cannot see thru the habitat wall, so as not to stress them.
